Many people believe that social networking sites have had a huge negative impact on society

Social networking sites have transformed the way people communicate and share information over the past two decades, and while they have brought undeniable benefits, a growing number of people believe their overall effect on society has been harmful. I partly agree with this view, though I think it is important to recognise that the impact of these platforms depends considerably on how they are used.

There is certainly strong evidence to suggest that social media has had damaging consequences in several areas. Perhaps most concerning is the effect on mental health, particularly among young people. Studies have repeatedly associated heavy social media use with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, as users compare their lives unfavourably with the carefully curated images others project online. Additionally, the spread of misinformation through social networks has become a serious problem, with false or misleading content often travelling faster and further than accurate reporting. This has had measurable consequences for public health and political discourse alike.

However, it would be misleading to characterise these platforms as purely negative. Social networks have enabled people to maintain connections across vast distances, supported communities of individuals who might otherwise feel isolated, and provided powerful tools for social movements and civic engagement. The Arab Spring, for instance, demonstrated how social media could empower citizens to organise and challenge oppressive governments. In everyday life, many people use these platforms to sustain meaningful relationships and access support networks that improve their wellbeing.

The key issue, therefore, may not be the technology itself but the absence of adequate regulation and digital literacy education. Platforms optimised for engagement rather than user wellbeing will inevitably produce harmful outcomes if left unchecked.

In conclusion, while social networking sites have introduced real and significant problems, dismissing them as entirely negative overlooks the genuine value they provide. A more balanced approach to regulation and education is the most constructive path forward.

This is a very well-written, articulate essay that fully addresses the prompt with a balanced stance, clear paragraph logic, and a high level of vocabulary and grammatical accuracy. Minor errors are virtually absent, and the writing demonstrates sophisticated cohesion and precise lexical control.

Scoring criteria

Task Response 8.0

Strengths

  • Presents a clear and nuanced stance in the introduction ('I partly agree with this view...').
  • Provides well-supported body paragraphs addressing both the negative and positive impacts of social media.

Weaknesses

  • Could push the synthesis in the conclusion slightly further to explicitly resolve the tension between the two perspectives.

The essay addresses all parts of the task fully, maintaining a consistent, well-reasoned position throughout with relevant examples and logical extensions.

Coherence & Cohesion 8.5

Strengths

  • Exceptional overall progression with clear, analytical topic sentences for each paragraph.
  • Smooth transitions and advanced referential cohesion without mechanical linking chains.

Weaknesses

  • Very minor occasional reliance on conventional discourse markers like 'However' and 'In conclusion', though perfectly natural in context.

Paragraphs are logically structured around central themes, and referencing is handled with precision, ensuring zero reader effort.

Lexical Resource 8.0

Strengths

  • Natural integration of high-level academic collocations ('carefully curated images', 'political discourse', 'civic engagement').
  • Precise stance nouns and academic phrasing ('denote', 'optmised for engagement', 'undeniable benefits').

Weaknesses

  • Vocabulary is sophisticated and accurate, though occasionally standard collocations are preferred over rarer idioms, which is entirely appropriate for academic register.

Wide resource used flexibly and accurately with rare or uncommon lexical items handled with full awareness of style and collocation.

Grammar Range & Accuracy 8.0

Strengths

  • Wide variety of complex structures, including concessive clauses, relative clauses, and participial phrases.
  • Near error-free syntax with immaculate punctuation control.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks rare advanced inversions or subjunctive structures, keeping the grammar score at 8.0 rather than 9.0.

The essay produces a high percentage of error-free sentences with sophisticated and flexible control over complex sentence patterns.
