What does our economy look like?

Interactive

When we look at the modern economy, it is evident that its structure is undergoing a rapid transformation. Today, our economic landscape is shaped by two powerful forces: digitalization and globalization. While traditional industries like manufacturing still play an important role, the service sector and tech companies have clearly become the main engines of growth in most developed nations.

On the one hand, this shift brings numerous advantages. Digital technologies allow businesses to operate more efficiently and reach international markets with ease. Consequently, consumers enjoy a wider variety of goods and services at lower prices. On the other hand, this transition poses significant challenges. The rise of automation, for example, creates a serious risk of job displacement, particularly for low-skilled workers. Furthermore, economic inequality continues to grow, as the wealth generated by the tech boom is not always distributed evenly.

In conclusion, our economy looks dynamic yet highly unpredictable. To ensure a stable and sustainable future, governments must find a balance between supporting technological innovation and protecting the workforce through education and retraining programs.

Scoring criteria

Task Response 7.0

Strengths

  • The introduction establishes a clear perspective on the changing modern economy driven by digitalization and globalization.
  • Body paragraphs develop distinct arguments addressing both advantages and challenges.

Weaknesses

  • The prompt is somewhat open-ended ('What does our economy look like?'), which allows for broad interpretation, but the essay focuses primarily on general economic shifts rather than specific deeper economic models.

The response presents a clear position, maintains a consistent focus throughout, and supports main claims with relevant reasoning and examples.

Coherence & Cohesion 7.5

Strengths

  • Paragraphs are logically organized with clear topic sentences and a natural progression from advantages to challenges.
  • Cohesive devices ('On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Consequently', 'Furthermore') are used naturally without being overly mechanical.

Weaknesses

  • Paragraph transitions could occasionally rely even more on lexical chains rather than standard signposting phrases.

Information and ideas are logically sequenced with clear overall progression, ensuring the reader can follow the text effortlessly.

Lexical Resource 7.0

Strengths

  • Uses precise vocabulary and topic-specific collocations such as 'digital landscape', 'job displacement', and 'technological innovation'.
  • Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate.

Weaknesses

  • Some vocabulary relies on common academic pairings rather than highly sophisticated C2-level idioms or advanced lexical phrases.

A sufficient range of vocabulary is used with good awareness of style and collocation, and no spelling errors are present.

Grammar Range & Accuracy 7.5

Strengths

  • Demonstrates a wide variety of complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses ('While traditional industries...', 'as the wealth generated...') and conditional/infinitive structures.
  • Grammar and punctuation control is exceptionally high, with almost no errors.

Weaknesses

  • Advanced structures such as negative inversion or subjunctive forms are absent, keeping the grammar score at 7.5 rather than 8.0+.

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with a high proportion of error-free clauses.
